CASSONE

16th century
Palazzo Reale, Turin
This magnificent Tuscan cassone, made to commemorate a wedding, is skillfully carved in high relief and has painted scenes from the story of Hercules. The gilded background contrasts sharply with the highly polished walnut. The sphinx feet may have been added at a later date.
