Scribing

(Sorry, I couldn't think of a cheap pun.)

 Here we scribe the pattern.  In this case, we are using an extant spoon instead of a pattern-board.  To make consistent spoons, you can make a flat silhouette out of plywood and it is easier to trace than from a 3-dimensional object. I also don't have any information as to the method of scribing the pattern.  I'm using a 20th century graphite pencil here, a number 2, I believe.  A medieval carver may have used a stylus to scratch a pattern, or even free-handed the carving.  We just don't know.
