Scribing
(Sorry, I couldn't think of a cheap pun.)
Here
we scribe the pattern. In this case, we are using an extant spoon
instead of a pattern-board. To make consistent spoons, you can make
a flat silhouette out of plywood and it is easier to trace than from a
3-dimensional object. I also don't have any information as to the method
of scribing the pattern. I'm using a 20th century graphite pencil
here, a number 2, I believe. A medieval carver may have used a stylus
to scratch a pattern, or even free-handed the carving. We just don't
know.
